Cowboys have yet to respond to Bears request for Mike McCarthy interview, one day later

It was reported on Monday afternoon that the Chicago Bears had put in a request to interview Mike McCarthy for their vacant head coaching position. Given that McCarthy is actively the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, this is a bit of an unusual thing.

But McCarthy is currently on an expiring contract which means that he is subject to interview if his current employer allows it. Almost 24 hours later (about 22 to be precise) it was reported by ESPN that the Cowboys still had yet to respond to Chicago.

Look, we can all feel however we each want to about Mike McCarthy and whether or not retaining him is the right course of action for the Cowboys. There is room for debate and discussion, clearly.

But it seems strange the Cowboys haven’t acted yet. If they are going to retain him then a new deal has been possible for an entire year now. Conversely, if Dallas is going to move on from McCarthy, there is zero reason to inhibit any future opportunities for him.

We all predicted that Dallas would drag this thing out as long as they possibly could and as has been reported many times, their exclusive window of negotiation with McCarthy expires on January 14th. Chicago putting in a request for McCarthy certainly changed that calculus a bit as responding (with approval or denial) would to at least a mild degree tip Dallas’ hand. They clearly seem to not want that.
