Cowboys to release RB Ezekiel Elliott per his request

Former first-round pick Ezekiel Elliott was signed back to the Dallas Cowboys in April in hopes of creating an effective duo with Rico Dowdle. Per Josina Anderson, the reunion won’t even last a full season as the Cowboys are releasing him.

Elliott won two rushing titles in his first three years in Dallas and led the league in rushing yards per game the season that he didn’t. Once he got his six-year deal worth $90 million in 2019, Elliott was still a very productive player. He finished fourth in rushing (1,357 yards) and second in all-purpose yards (1,777). However, injuries and time started to take a toll on Elliott, and eventually Tony Pollard took over as the lead guy. In 2024, Elliott put up 226 rushing yards and three touchdowns while averaging a career-low 3.1 yards per carry.

It was just simply time for Dallas to move on at this point with the lack of production and disciplinary issues earlier in the season with Elliott. Elliott requested the move, probably in hopes he can hook up with a playoff club that needs depth.

He leaves the Cowboys as third on the franchise’s all-time list in rushing yards (8,488) and rushing touchdowns (71) behind Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett. So, he’ll undoubtedly be remembered as one of the great runners in Cowboys history.
