Cowboys training camp: Israel Mukuamu has a big day
The Dallas Cowboys secondary may be the deepest group on the team. With cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland leading the way, it’s also accompanied by a safety room full of steady veterans.
However, it was none of the usual suspects that made the most noise on Wednesday; that would be Israel Mukuamu, who made sure the Cowboys didn’t forget about him when talking about the group.
Israel Mukuamu makes his presence felt in Wednesday’s practice
It was day two of full-pad work for the team, and with that, always comes a cranked-up level of competition. Tempers flare, players hit, and plays are made. In the case of Mukuamu, several plays were made.
Early in practice, Mukuamu was able to track down a deep ball from Trey Lance while in coverage against WR Cam Johnson. Lance uncorked the long toss, but Mukuamu looked as if he was the intended target.
The natural ball skills he possesses were on full display, and while the play was a nice one, he didn’t stop there.
The second interception of the day was against a more established WR, Jalen Tolbert. While Tolbert has been having a nice camp, Mukuamu got the best of him on this rep to secure another takeaway. Mukuamu was sticky in coverage, mirrored Tolbert step for step, and jumped in front of the pass for the easy interception. As far as press coverage goes, it was as close to ‘teach tape’ as you can get.
While it was only one day, and Mukuamu will need many more to ensure he makes a good impression on new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, this is a great start to camp for a player that has unique size and traits. Fans have been hoping to see more of the former South Carolina Gamecock, and if he is able to continue this level of play throughout camp and preseason, it may become too much to ignore.
