What’s All the Buzz About Google’s Pixel 6?

Google has released some information on the Pixel 6 series ahead of the October 19th event. How durable will these phones be? Will they be a good buy? And does Google have any surprises up its sleeve? The following is a sneak peek at the presentation, with some last-minute leaks.

Reintroduction of flagship phones

Unlike prior phone launches, Google has revealed basic details about the Pixel 6 family months in advance. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be Google’s first high-end phones after the Pixel 5. Both phones will be made of glass. They’ll have better low-light performance (150 percent more light than prior versions) and “all-day” battery life despite 5G compatibility.

The Tensor chip will be the focus of both Pixel 6 models. Google hasn’t disclosed Tensor’s full specs yet, but it’s the company’s first custom SoC. The design’s AI processing enables activities previously “impossible” on conventional SoCs, such as juggling many AI workloads or analyzing live video.

The rest of the narrative may not be too far away. Carphone Warehouse promotional pages appear to show a substantial amount of what Google wants to present. The Pixel 6 regular will fight against ‘entry-level’ flagships like the Galaxy S21 and iPhone 13. Its 6.7-inch curved 120Hz display and third 48MP telephoto lens make it the clear top-of-the-line gadget. Recharge your earbuds or other phones using 30W cable charging, 23W wireless charging, or reverse charging.

So, Tensor? On paper, Tensor is faster than the Pixel 5 (which isn’t unexpected given the Pixel’s subpar Snapdragon 765G CPU), but the real star may be its camera. In addition to the Magic Eraser for removing photobombers, Google is working on Face Unblur to keep people in focus, and Motion Mode for action photos. While anti-photobombing isn’t new (Huawei and Samsung phones have it for years), it’s new to Pixels and may work better with Tensor.

The Pixel 6 has Google’s Tensor chip

Google hasn’t revealed the Pixel 6’s technical specs or the range of Tensor-assisted capabilities. A lot more technical facts about the Pixel 6 will be revealed at the presentation, but not enough to make direct comparisons between Tensor and other mobile CPUs.

Google may also innovate in the way the Pixel 6 is offered. Today’s M for Tech Today. This includes monthly phone payments, an extended warranty, Google One cloud storage, Play Pass, an optional Google Fi service, and either YouTube Music or YouTube Premium. By integrating virtually all of your demands into one subscription, Google would effectively compete with Apple One.

Regardless of price, you may benefit from better software support. That Google would supply Pixel 6 owners with “at least” five years of security upgrades was confirmed by Carphone Warehouse pages. That’s significantly longer than the three-to-four-year average for Android, and similar to Apple. It’s unclear whether you’ll get full OS updates over that five-year period, but you may not have to worry about patchable vulnerabilities.

Release date, price

The Pixel 6 will undoubtedly cost more than its predecessor. Unlike the Pixel 5, its sequel is a premium device. A “premium-priced product,” Google says the Pixel 6 Pro will be. But how much more will you have to pay?

That’s a tough call. A German ad said the Pixel 6 will cost €649 (about $750). According to a source, the 6 Pro will cost €899 (about $1,050). We advise care with these prices since they are subject to change and may not convert exactly. Dense search results are still expensive.

Whether you like it or not, Google will follow its competitors’ lead and leave the charger out of the box. Having a USB-C charger on hand isn’t a big deal, but it might be difficult if you’re new to USB-C or have an old power brick. Consider this while computing the pricing.

The Pixel 6 is expected to be released around the week of October 25th, according to prior leaks. We’d expect a broad international launch. Unlike the Pixel 5a, which was limited to the US and Japan owing to supply issues, the Pixel 6 appears to be going global.

Few surprises

We don’t expect Google to reveal much more than the Pixel 6 and its software. Google’s event marketing has been all about the phones. Other gadgets are unlikely, and if they do exist, they will be secondary.

That doesn’t mean we can’t consider new gear. Google’s expensive Pixel Buds have been out for over a year, while products like Nest WiFi haven’t been updated in a long time. Unless Google is redesigning the Pixel series, what is now offered is still relevant and functional.

It is also possible to add or upgrade services. If Google creates a Pixel Pass, it may provide new features or benefits like extra cloud storage. Google may have continued to enable unlimited photo uploads for Pixel owners after it capped everyone else in June. Services drive hardware sales, which may be key for the Pixel 6.
