Plans to renovate a hotel built in the ’70s are moving forward in downtown San Antonio near La Villita.
The San Antonio Historic and Design Review Commission approved a proposal to renovate the 251-key Marriott Plaza Hotel, which will rebrand as Autograph Collection Hotel by Marriott.
“The hotel is approximately 40 years old and it’s an opportunity to turn a good hotel into a great hotel, while retaining the significance of the historic buildings on the site,” said Mike Banas, a spokesman for White Lodging, the company spearheading the renovation. He declined to provide a timeline of the project.
As part of the project, the exterior will get new finishes to match the character of the La Villita neighborhood. HKS Inc. of Dallas is the architect.
Three historic structures on site will also get painting and repairs. The owners want to build an event center and fitness center on the site as well, although the fitness center structure was not approved by the commission and will have to return in a future meeting.
Terry Dammeyer of White Lodging told the commission that the project team requested the commission’s approval to begin demolition of the guest rooms, and that the company is willing to wait for approval of the fitness structure.
White Lodging and REI Real Estate Services, both based in Indiana, together bought the hotel in 2019.
The hotel complex currently spans 6 acres and includes 17,000 square feet of meeting space.
