The Cowboys are mentioned again as a perfect landing spot for Richard Sherman – Blogging The Boys

People are still talking about it, but will the Cowboys act on it.
The Dallas Cowboys are seemingly content with the cornerbacks they currently have heading into Oxnard for training camp. But will it stay that way? Many observers of the Cowboys rank their cornerbacks as one of the weakest position groups on an NFL roster. Second-year man Trevon Diggs is the headliner, and he’s joined by veterans Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis. The Cowboys also added Kelvin Joseph and Nahshon Wright in the draft. Overall, that’s a pretty thin group.
That’s why there have been constant whispers that the Cowboys need to add a veteran cornerback at some point before the season. There is one that constantly gets mentioned when that is discussed. Richard Sherman is still a free agent and he once played for Dan Quinn, and he had nothing but good things to say about his former coach. So naturally, when landing spots for Sherman are discussed, the Cowboys show up more often than not.
CBS Sports joins the chorus:
Richard Sherman, CB
Suggested landing spot: Dallas Cowboys
Sherman is best known for his days as a key piece to Seattle’s Legion of Boom defense that was routinely contending for Super Bowls but his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers over the last few years continued to show that he’s still a more-than-solid corner when healthy. He was second-team All-Pro in 2019 as the Niners reached Super Bowl LIV, but Sherman was limited to just five games in 2020 due to a calf strain. He was released in February and has patiently been waiting for the right opportunity to arise ever since.
While it was tempting to project a storybook ending to Sherman’s career with a return to Seattle, the Cowboys do present an interesting landing spot as well. Dallas has invested in the secondary over the last two seasons with second-round picks Kelvin Joseph (2021) and Trevon Diggs (2020), but they could use a veteran piece like Sherman to help mold the still-developing unit over the next season or so. It also doesn’t hurt that Sherman would have some familiarity with Dallas’ defensive scheme with former Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn now running that unit for head coach Mike McCarthy
The three spots that are generally mentioned for Sherman are ones where there is some familiarity, Dallas, Seattle and San Francisco. But PFT notes that Seattle and San Francisco might not be as welcoming spots as some may perceive.
Sherman had an at-times rocky relationship with Russell Wilson in Seattle; now that Wilson and the team have renewed their vows (or, perhaps, have pressed pause on the potential divorce for eight months), it’s hard to imagine the Seahawks stirring the pot with a player who once yelled “you effing suck!” at Russ.
In San Francisco, well, let’s just say if the 49ers wanted him on the team, he’d be on the team. As Simms and I previously have discussed on PFT Live, a palpable sense existed entering the 2019 season that the 49ers considered moving on from Sherman after only one year with the team. But Jason Verrett got injured and Sherman stayed…
All signs point to Sherman waiting until deep into training camp before deciding on a deal with someone. By that time, injuries could make teams desperate for his services, or he could just take a one-year deal with a team of his choosing that is also interested.
Will that team be Dallas?
